Frequently asked questions

Who are we looking for?

To be involved you need to:

    • Be available for at least one day of the event
    • Be aged 16+ by 1 April 2027
    • Be willing to learn and be happy to complete all training required before volunteering
    • Have a real enthusiasm for welcoming and talking to visitors
    • Have the right to work in the UK
    • Understand we may need to conduct a security risk assessment check, depending on role
Do I need previous experience?

No! We welcome and encourage anyone interested and eager to support to apply as full training will be provided. During the application process, you will be given the chance to outline any skills or experience that you want to share and think could be helpful.

What language requirements will there be to volunteer?

Volunteers must be able to speak and read English, or communicate using British Sign Language (BSL), but English does not need to be your first language.

I’m under 18, can I still be involved?

Absolutely! Some of our roles require volunteers to be aged 18+ but there are still plenty of opportunities for people aged 16-18. If you under 18 at the time of applying, you will require parental permission to sign up and must be 16 on or before 1 April 2027.

Can I volunteer with someone else?

If you require a companion, carer or personal assistant to support you while volunteering, we are happy to assist with this. This person will also need to be registered as a volunteer so they have all the necessary information to safely support you.

Outside of this, due to the scale of the event, unfortunately we are unable to guarantee you will be assigned a role or shift with friends or family.

Can I apply if I’m not based in the UK?

You can, provided you have the right to work in the UK. Under current UK Visa and Immigration guidelines, volunteering at an event such as the Grand Départ  2027 is only permitted if you have the Right to Work in the UK. Volunteering at the event does not create a contract of employment.

How can I tell you about my existing skills and experience?

Within the volunteer application form, there is the chance to tell us all about yourself, whether that be skills and experiences or your reasons for wanting to volunteer.

While existing experience can be useful, we’re encouraging first time volunteers to get involved with the event too!

How will you decide where I volunteer?

As part of your application you will tell us which stage you want to volunteer on, and we encourage you to choose the stage you live nearest to. You can find the route maps for each stage on our website. You will also share your address details as part of the application, and we will use this information to work out which part of the route is nearest to you, to help minimise your travel to and from your training and shift(s). You will be offered a role and shift which will include a location which you can choose to accept or decline by the end of 2026.

I have a disability or accessibility need, can I volunteer?

Absolutely, we are encouraging people with disabilities to support us by giving their time to volunteer. We have shared information on each of the roles within our application that will help you make an informed decision about the role that best suits you. You can also tell us about your disability, and any support you might need to volunteer on the volunteer application. We understand everyone is different, so we may reach out to you to chat to you further about how we can make your experience as a JOY Maker as rewarding as possible.

I may need support with applying to be a JOY Maker, what is available to me?

We have created application information in an Easy Read format, that may help you, this includes our Volunteer Agreement, Volunteer Application Form, a list of out Volunteer Roles, and general information about Volunteering as a JOY Maker.
